In a surprising turn of events, Tyler Perry’s new erotic thriller has claimed the #1 seat on Netflix. Mea Culpa landed on the streamer Friday, and the internet has been having fun with the title ever since. While the reviews are still coming in, it seems safe to say the steamy title has the internet’s attention. If this 2024 title flew under your radar, let me help you catch up to the rest of us.

Per the synopsis,

“When criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland) takes on the murder case of artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), the truth isn’t as obvious as it seems. While she tries to determine the innocence or guilt of her cagy-yet-seductive client, it is uncovered that everyone is guilty of something.”

Twitter seems to think the real villains of the movie are the husband and mother-in-law. Many people are using the app to air their grievances with both characters. Others are happy that Kelly Rowland was given better wigs than most actors who sign on for a Tyler Perry production.

Mea Culpa was written and directed by Tyler Perry. The movie stars Kelly Rowland, Trevante Rhodes, Sean Sagar, Nick Sagar, RonReaco Lee, and Shannon Thornton.

I assume most Netflix subscribers hit play because Kelly Rowland is the star of the film. While she has dabbled in the genre a few times, she usually sticks to more family-friendly films. Many fans are probably happy to see her do something a little more outside of her comfort zone.

I had not heard of this Netflix movie until Twitter did what it does best this weekend. So, I have been enjoying the reactions and highly encourage you to do the same. Let me know if you watched Mea Culpa and what you thought about the movie at @misssharai.
