Killer New ‘Mortal Kombat’ Movie Dominates HBO Max Charts: A “Visual odyssey for any 80’s/90’s aesthetic aficionado”

Simon McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat is one of the best video game movies ever made. I don’t know that I’d go so far as to call it a great movie, but there’s a perverse sense of fun that runs throughout, too often missing from these kinds of adaptations. Of course, the decision to make it an R-rated spectacle helped matters considerably, finally giving audiences the gruesome, visceral cinematic fatalities they’ve been craving since the series first launched in 1992.

The animated adult film, Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match, recently premiered on Max where it cracked the Top 10. If you want more brutal takedowns, here’s your chance.

Per Max: In 1980s Hollywood, action star Johnny Cage is looking to become an A-list actor. But when his costar, Jennifer, goes missing from set, Johnny finds himself thrust into a world filled with shadows, danger, and deceit. As he embarks on a bloody journey, Johnny quickly discovers the City of Angels has more than a few devils in its midst.

Cage Match is the fourth installment in the Legends series, starting with 2020’s Scorpion’s Revenge, 2021’s Battles of the Realms, and 2022’s Snow Blind. Each animated release serves as a kind of origin story, an audience entry point for a new Mortal Kombat fighter.

While they bear no connection to the live-action series, fans might be happy to hear Mortal Kombat 2 recently wrapped filming. None other than Karl Urban will be playing the live-action iteration of Legends’ Johnny Cage. I’m pumped.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match on Max is the perfect way to bide time until the sequel is released. Online, fans have been loving the violent, 1980s odyssey of Johnny Cage and his quest for answers. Check out what audiences have been saying online below:
