Ultra-Indie Daily Dose: One Night at the Mansion Is One Great Little Horror
Hello, you glorious gluttons for all things indie horror! Are you just starving for the newest of the new, the most unknownest of the unknown? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to the Ultra-Indie Daily Dose! In this series, we’re going to pick a new game every day from an indie horror creator you’ve probably never heard of. No million-dollar budgets or factory productions. This is the space for the little guy with not but a developer toolkit and a dream. So if you’re down to roll the dice on something different, then stick around and check it out!
The nonstop game jams from itch.io are my favorite part of the website. Hundreds of participants over the last few months, all turning out some amazing little projects. Today’s Dose comes from Miz Jam 1, whatever that means. This jam required devs to all use the same selection of pixelated assets. Of the many dozens of participants, the one I would first recommend is One Night at the Mansion.
One Night at the Mansion seems simple enough. You are a kid with a candle (which for some reason functions as a flashlight), and you just have to explore a spooky mansion. A premise we’ve all seen before.. But what separates One Night from the rest is how phenomenal the sound design is. Nothing of this jam has put me more on edge then the perfectly timed and perfectly terrifying noises throughout the game. The notes and exploration are fine, but the sound is where this one really shines.
