Ruggero Deodato Returns To Cannibal Holocaust With Video Game Sequel

Well, this one is a bit of a shock. And not the, “murdering animals on screen,” kind of shock. It seems that Italian horror legend Ruggero Deodato is finally creating a new followup to his infamous Cannibal Holocaust. It’s been 40 years since the film released, and 35 years since he released his last cannibal film, Cut and Run. Not only that, but this newest installment will be a video game. Titled Cannibal, it’s being made by a studio known for cartoon-style pixel bullet hell games. This is like hearing that David Lynch was returning to Twin Peaks, but as a VR game. Oh wait

Honestly, I’m not going to pretend I’m a Cannibal Holocaust expert. The film came out a decade before I was even born. I’ve watched it, and can definitely say it’s shocking. Mostly for the animal murder. It turns your stomach, and I can respect that. I don’t watch it for fun. Still, it is quaint to think anyone ever thought it was an actual snuff film. By modern standards, only the animal murder is really shocking. We civilized nations prefer to have our animal murder happen behind closed doors where we can all pretend it doesn’t happen.

So instead of talking about how much this game means to the overall horror landscape, I’m just going to let the game’s about page do the talking. Be warned, I’m pretty sure it was written in Italian and translated by Google:

On the fortieth anniversary of the release of the cult film “Cannibal Holocaust“, director Ruggero Deodato announces the fourth, highly awaited chapter of his cannibals cycle, with great news: the new episode will not be a movie, but a videogame created in collaboration with Fantastico Studio. The themes are the ones that made the the saga popular: natives lives, told in its rawness, and cannibalism, powerful metaphors that reveal the most disturbing and deep impulses in our society.

However, the formula changes: Cannibal is an interactive horror graphic adventure made with Unity, with the direction and script of Ruggero Deodato, the original drawings of Solo Macello, in which the player will take control of different characters, to reveal, little by little, the background that led them to a desperate expedition to the virgin jungles of Borneo. And of course, get to discover the end of the story, destined to shake from the foundations every certainty acquired during the game. Cannibal will be available from November 2020 for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC and mobile.

There’s currently no footage of Cannibal, but it is slated to release in November for PS4, PC, Xbox One, Switch, and Mobile. If you want to learn more about the developer Fantastico Studio, you can click here to learn more.
