Fans can’t get enough of this disturbing new entry in a popular HBO series. Who can blame them? After all, it is not every day that beloved filmmaker Issa López breathes new life into a title by disturbing its dead. True Detective: Night Country is the #1 Max (formerly HBO Max) series across the globe. It seems to be appointment television for many of us, including powerhouses like Leslie Jones and Tananarive Due. If you don’t know why this season particularly has the internet excited, continue reading.

In the series,

“When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”

Fans of this season of the anthology series are obsessed with the look, the music, the callbacks, and the acting. However, many of us are happy to get another López project onto our screens.

While True Detective had built a fanbase with its previous three seasons, many of us are only now tuning in because of the López Effect. Luckily, she seems to be set on exceeding our high expectations. Dread Central’s Editor-in-Chief, Mary Beth McAndrews, wrote in her review,

“López, the first woman to lead the series, uses her penchant for melding horror with social justice to weave an important, and scary, narrative about missing Indigenous women, preserving cultural identity, the undead, and the radical idea of a matriarchal society.”

New episodes of True Detective: Night Country air on Sundays at 9 PM ET on Max.

Did you also find yourself quietly starting an Issa López fan club after her Tigers Are Not Afraid broke you? Did you also flock to True Detective when she let us know she is, in fact, who would be there? Then we have a couple things in common and should fangirl together at @misssharai.
