Martin Scorsese’s 11 Favorite Horror Movies of All Time

Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese is having a banner year. Killers of the Flower Moon is a triumph in filmmaking, all the more so on account of Scorsese’s already impressive resume. We’re talking Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, After Hours, and way too many more to name. The banner year is also a tough year, with the likes of Greta Gerwig, Christopher Nolan, and Justine Triet among others vying for that coveted Best Director Oscar. 2023 was a remarkable year for film genre or otherwise, and for the first time in a long time, I can’t say I’d be disappointed with any of the above winning.

As an addendum to your Martin Scorsese education, why not take a look at the filmmaker’s 11 favorite horror movies of all time? Scorsese, like the best of them, regularly culls from antecedent films and draws remarkable inspiration from the filmmakers who came before him. The influence of these 11 titles can be seen throughout his career. Read on to see what one of the greatest filmmakers of all time has to say per The Daily Beast.

The Haunting

Isle of the Dead

The Uninvited

The Entity

Dead of Night

The Changeling

The Shining

The Exorcist

Night of the Demon

The Innocents

Psycho

It’s a diverse list, not limited to any particular decade. It’s great to see Scorsese spotlight some lesser-known gems, too. The Entity is one of the scariest haunted house movies of all time, anchored by a sensational Barbara Hershey, and it simply isn’t talked about enough. Plus, both The Changeling and The Innocents are two of the all-time greats, certifiably haunting ghost stories that are impossible to shake.

Additionally, both Scorsese and Stephen King seem to have a soft spot for Jacques Tourneur’s Night of the Demon. If you haven’t checked that one out yet, this is your sign.

What do you think of Martin Scorsese’s favorite horror movies? What does your list look like? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins. For reference, my Top 4 (11 is too much to consider right now) is as follows: Scream, The Orphanage, The Wailing, and Black Christmas, in no particular order.
