Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein Has Found Its New Monster: Jacob Elordi

Jacob Elordi from The Mortuary Collection

It’s alive. And… it’s Jacob Elordi. According to Deadline, Andrew Garfield, previously attached to play the classic horror monster in Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix adaptation of Frankenstein, has had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Next Big Thing Jacob Elordi is now set to replace him in the forthcoming Netflix release. Recently, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, and Christian Convery were additionally announced to be joining the ever-expanding ensemble. It’s going to be a star-studded affair, no doubt.

Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth, both announced last year, remain attached to the project. Del Toro is set to write, direct, and produce Frankenstein alongside producer J. Miles Dale, marking another collaboration between the pair after Netflix’s Cabinet of Curiosities. In the original Mary Shelley novel, a mad scientist’s stunning creation leads to tragedy for both, fertile ground for del Toro and his brand of heartrending whimsy, no doubt.

Whether this new adaptation will take considerable liberties with the source material or not remains to be seen, though it’s certainly a boon to have Jacob Elordi attached. Elordi, no stranger to the horror genre (check out The Mortuary Collection if you haven’t), seems a compelling fit for the role. So much so, that when Netflix announced the casting on Twitter, they gave him top billing.

Check out their tweet below:

This year, genre fans might remember Jacob Elordi from Saltburn, a psychological thriller that made several of our writers’ year-end lists. He’s one of the most exciting talents working today, and I’m thrilled to see what comes of his collaboration with del Toro.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to Frankenstein? How do you think Jacob Elordi will fare in the role? As always, I’ll be on Twitter over @Chadiscollins, probably scrolling through Saltburn bathtub memes, wondering whether Frankenstein will give the internet something new to obsess over.
