For the past several years, rumors have been floating around horror land that Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green would be directing a remake of Dario Argento’s Suspiria, which at one point had Natalie Portman attached to star.
Unfortunately, Gordon Green just revealed in an interview with Esquire that the project is dead in the water, citing that nobody in Hollywood is as interested right now in making an elegant and classy horror film as he is. He also mentioned that though he’s got the whole movie planned out and he’s completely ready to go, the version he’s got dancing around in the ole noggin is just too expensive to find its way in front of the camera.
Gordon Green went on to say that his remake would be “very respectful of the original film,” but it will nevertheless likely never happen. Damn shame, considering he seems to really love the original and planned on doing it proper justice.
Based on Dario Argento’s 1977 film of the same name, Suspiria was written by Green and Chris Gebert and centered on Suzie, a bright and ambitious American student who travels to Europe to attend a world renowned school. After a fellow student is brutally murdered and several other cruel and strange homicides disrupt the once quiet life on campus, Suzie realizes that the academy may be a front for a more menacing organization.
