‘The People’s Joker’ Will Have Its Day In Theaters
It seems like The People’s Joker is finally getting the last laugh. After debuting, and then being swiftly removed over alleged copyright issues, at the 2022 edition of TIFF, the film has found a distributor. Altered Innocence has acquired the rights and will bring the title to North American audiences as early as next year.
In the film,
“An unfunny clown with a Smylex addiction grapples with gender identity, love, and foes while founding an illegal comedy theater in Gotham City.”
The People’s Joker is written by Vera Drew and Bri LeRose. The film stars Drew as the lead, who describes the script as semi-autobiographical. Other actors attached to the movie include Bob Odenkirk and Maria Bamford. The title will premiere at the IFC Center in New York City on April 5th, 2024.
One of the few souls who were lucky enough to see the movie at TIFF was Dread Central’s Emily Gagne. In her review, she wrote:
“Twisting what has become an incel anthem into a tale of queer empowerment, The People’s Joker confronts the problematic parts of the Batman universe (see: the toxic relationship between Joker and Harley) as well as the comedy community (cue jabs at Louie C.K. and Bill Cosby). Sometimes it can feel like The People’s Joker is trying to say too much at once. But considering how hard it can be to break through as a marginalized person in fandom and other creative spaces, you can’t blame Drew for wanting to take this opportunity to put it all on the table.”
