This Apocalyptic Netflix Thriller Continues To Dominate The Charts: “This film has everything!”

My generation is no stranger to prophecies declaring the world is ending soon. So, it is a little hard for us to get excited about apocalypse movies anymore. Once you “survive” Y2K and a few of her cousins who had less creative PR teams, it is impossible to not be jaded. That’s why this new Netflix thriller refusing to exit the Netflix charts is a pleasant surprise. The star-studded end-of-the-world movie Leave the World Behind is the #1  movie on the streamer again. If you have not heard of it before, don’t worry! We have all the details, and we will not leave you behind.

In the film,

“In this apocalyptic thriller from award-winning writer and director Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot), Amanda (Julia Roberts) and her husband Clay (Ethan Hawke), rent a luxurious home for the weekend with their kids, Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie). Their vacation is soon upended when two strangers—G.H. (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth—arrive in the night, bearing news of a mysterious cyberattack and seeking refuge in the house they claim is theirs. The two families reckon with a looming disaster that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world.”

Leave the World Behind is based on the National Book Award-nominated novel of the same name written by Rumaan Alam. The film was produced by Higher Ground Productions, a company founded by Michelle and Barack Obama.

Netflix viewers are here for most of the cast and having a ton of fun with the film’s premise on Twitter. However, it seems the juxtaposition of Julia Roberts and popular 1990s R&B is what is breaking the internet.

See what Twitter is saying:

Leave the World Behind had a limited theatrical release beginning on November 22. It then made its Netflix debut on December 8, where it has been causing a commotion ever since.

Originally, the two-hour and 21-minute runtime gave me pause. However, learning one character is just trying to watch her favorite show as the world ends makes it sound hella relatable. I am putting it back in my queue as we speak. Please respect my privacy at this time.

Have you watched Leave the World Behind on Netflix yet? Is it one of your favorite thrillers to hit the streamer this year? Let me know at @misssharai because I am playing catch-up in that subgenre and need help prioritizing all these titles.
