Guillermo del Toro has been making movies since 1985. His filmography tells the story of a genre-blending filmmaker with a distinct aesthetic. This is why his movies connect with most audiences no matter the subgenre. This is also why we’re excited to see the underrated Pacific Rim climbing the Hulu charts this week.

If you somehow missed out on this film, it was a 2013 sci-fi movie aimed at the PG-13 crowd. It has a 132-minute runtime but has enough Kaiju to keep the youth’s attention. Buckle up as I elaborate on why this movie was a moment for tweens 10 years ago.

In the film,

“Long ago, legions of monstrous creatures called Kaiju arose from the sea, bringing with them all-consuming war. To fight the Kaiju, mankind developed giant robots called Jaegers, designed to be piloted by two humans locked together in a neural bridge. However, even the Jaegers are not enough to defeat the Kaiju, and humanity is on the verge of defeat. Mankind’s last hope now lies with a washed-up ex-pilot (Charlie Hunnam), an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi), and an old, obsolete Jaeger.”

Pacific Rim was directed by Guillermo del Toro. The screenplay was written by Travis Beacham and Guillermo del Toro. The cast includes Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Sarah Paulson, Connie Nielsen, Ron Perlman, and Peter Fonda.

Twitter refused to let the film’s 10th-anniversary pass by without some fanfare. Many of them shared why the movie is so important to them and their art inspired by it.

Have you had a chance to check out Pacific Rim on Hulu? Do you think kids today are getting movies as cool as this anymore? Or do you think the PG-13 was better in our day? Then get off my lawn and get onto Twitter so we can talk about it @misssharai.
