#SDCC 2013: Kevin Grevioux Talks I, FrankensteinEvan Dickson from Bloody Disgusting just wrote in with some comments from Underworld star Kevin Grevioux regarding his new film I, Frankenstein, starring Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy, Yvonne Strahovski, Miranda Otto, Jai Courtney, and Aden Young as Victor Frankenstein.

Evan Dickson: You wrote the screenplay, what’s it like adapting your own work for the big screen?

Kevin Grevioux: “I actually wrote the screenplay first and extrapolated that out to a graphic novel to build the IP. After you write a screenplay you think of a lot of things that you want to put in. There’s really too much material. You build this whole universe. It’s like what I did with ‘Underworld’, finding monsters of lore and finding a way to bring them into a modern context.”

ED: What’s it like dropping Frankenstein’s monster into modern day then?

KG: “It’s going to be a very gothic tone, much like ‘Underworld.’ Our monsters in this film are Gargoyles and Demons, but they have their place in the larger macrocosm. We’re really trying to create something really cool and I think his character works well in that environment. It’s about how this monster, created by man and created by God, tries to find himself by going through this gauntlet of problems.”

ED: And you perform in the film as well?

KG: “Yes, I play a character called Decker. He’s Bill Nighy’s right hand man, his evil orders come through me.”

ED: The Underworld films have a very specific color palette and visual identity. Will this retain some of that?

KG: “It’s not the same universe, but it is the same genre. So in terms of tone and look they don’t necessarily have the same color palette. ‘Underworld,’ as you know, had a bluish tint to it. This doesn’t have that. I think if there was a color it would be more gold.”

ED: Who does Yvonne Strahovski play?

KG: “Her name is Tara. She’s an electrophysiologist, so she’s trying to discover how to bring dead things back to life. A better way to say it is to reanimate. For what purpose? When people die on the table you want to find a way to resuscitate them. But once she finds out that the myth of Frankenstein is actually true…“

Directed by Stuart Beattie based on the graphic novel by Kevin Grievoux, the film stars Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy, Yvonne Strahovski, Miranda Otto, Jai Courtney, Socratis Otto, Mahesh Jadu, Caitlin Stasey and Aden Young as Victor Frankenstein. Look for it in theatres on January 24, 2014.

Synopsis
Set in a dystopic present where vigilant gargoyles and ferocious demons rage in a battle for ultimate power, Victor Frankenstein’s creation Adam (Aaron Eckhart) finds himself caught in the middle as both sides race to discover the secret to his immortality.
