Everything We Know So Far About ‘M3GAN 2.0′

m3gan 2.0

Love it or hate it, M3GAN has taken the world by storm. Made for a budget of just $12 million, the picture has already grossed in excess of $100 million worldwide. With returns like that, a sequel is an inevitability. As such, Blumhouse has cut to the chase and greenlit a follow-up which will go before audiences in 2025.

M3GAN follows young Cady (Violet McGraw) and her parents as they set out on a ski trip in the Pacific Northwest mountains. But inclement weather sees the family of three losing control of their SUV and crashing. Cady survives with only minor cuts and bruises and is placed in the custody of her aunt Gemma (Allison Williams). Gemma is a toy designer at a company called Funki, where her work sees her specializing in AI-based tech. Frazzled from job-related stress and suddenly being saddled with parenting duty, Gemma introduces Cady to a prototype she’s been working on, a doll called M3GAN that can learn from interactions with her playmate. The pairing is initially a success but when M3GAN begins to behave unpredictably, Gemma wonders if she has made a grave mistake.

*Beware, spoilers for M3GAN lay ahead.*

Although the titular character is seemingly destroyed at the end of M3GAN, right before the credits roll, we see that the killer doll’s software appears to have infiltrated aunt Gemma’s AI-based smart home device. What will the malevolent plaything get up to in the sequel and who will be involved with the project? Keep reading to find out everything we know so far about M3GAN 2.0.

Plot details for M3GAN 2.0 are being kept under wraps but we have some theories.

Based on the reaction to the titular character, her dance moves, and her quirky mannerisms, I suspect M3GAN 2.0 will go the route of Child’s Play 2 and see the essence of the killer doll transferred into an updated incarnation that everyone is initially certain is safe and free of bugs. That route seems the most likely, as it avoids disrupting a formula that has already proven successful. However, there is also a possibility that the follow-up will go the way of Demon Seed and see M3GAN’s consciousness(?) infiltrating a software program. Alternately, the creative team could also dream up a scenario where M3GAN attaches herself to a new, unrelated product from the Funki lineup and gets up to various forms of criminal mischief.

There are infinite possibilities. But we’ll have to wait a beat as more information makes itself available to know for certain what’s next.

A 2025 release date has already been announced.

Even though the original film is still enjoying a successful exhibition, the upcoming follow-up has secured a January 17, 2025 theatrical bow. That date may shift in the next two years. But it’s a sure sign that Blumhouse and company are serious about getting the next installment ready to go before audiences.

Cast members, producers, and the original screenwriter will be returning for M3GAN 2.0.

Both Violet McGraw (who plays Cady) and Allison Williams (who plays Gemma) have been called upon to reprise their roles for the sequel.

Akela Cooper has been tapped to pen the screenplay for M3GAN 2.0. The scribe has been on a winning streak of late, having previously scripted Malignant, before giving life to viral sensation M3GAN. She also penned the upcoming The Nun 2.

Jason Blum, Allison Williams, and James Wan are already attached to the sequel as producers. Michael Clear and Judson Scott from the Atomic Monster banner have been tapped to serve as executive producers alongside Ryan Turek, Mark Katchur, Adam Hendricks, and Greg Gilreath.

No director has been announced yet.

I would be a little surprised if M3GAN director Gerard Johnstone wasn’t invited back to helm the upcoming sequel. But there’s no word just yet on whether or not he will be back for round two.

The sequel has been in the works since before the original even hit screens.

Blumhouse exec Jason Blum revealed to Variety that he had so much faith in M3GAN that a sequel was inevitable before the original even made its way to theaters. He said, “After I first saw the movie, we had a good sense that a sequel might really work. So, we broke our cardinal rule and we started talking about a sequel before the movie was released. I felt so bullish that we started entertaining a sequel earlier than we usually do.”
