‘The Beyond’: 4K Restoration of Lucio Fulci’s Classic Comes To Theaters

Lucio Fulci is not only a horror master, but a master of eye trauma. If you’ve seen any of his films, like Zombi 2, you know exactly what I mean. Fulci knows gore and what better way to experience that gore than on the big screen? Thankfully, Grindhouse Releasing is bringing Fulci’s classic The Beyond to theaters!
The Beyond is the second film in Fulci’s Gates of Hell trilogy (City of the Living Dead is the first, with The House by the Cemetery (1981) the third installment). It takes place in Louisiana where a young woman has inherited an old hotel in a secluded part of the state. The longer she stays, the more she begins to suspect her inheritance may sit on top of a gateway to hell itself.
Grindhouse Releasing is touring their new 4K restoration of The Beyond around the United States and Canada. But that’s not all. Their restoration also features a new music score by the original composer Fabio Frizzi.
Frizzi frequently collaborated with Fulci, scoring other horror classics from the director such as Zombi 2 and The City of The Living Dead. But Frizzi’s work on The Beyond is perhaps his most celebrated, being declared as one of the best horror scores of all time by outlets such as The Rolling Stone.
But why compose a new score when the original is essentially perfect? Frizzi explained in the 2019 book Blood on Black Wax: Horror Soundtracks on Vinyl:
“The definitive mix of a movie is a difficult matter in which [everyone’s] ideas flow and where the director has to create the right balance under his artistic view. For the new composer’s cut, I found my old notes taken with Lucio and many of the scenes that I newly scored contain the original, unused music cues…It is basically a new reading of that movie. I tried to do the work imagining Lucio sitting beside me. The true Beyond is always the one dated 1981, but I hope this new one will be a pleasant experience for all of those who loved that one.”
