TikTok Unearths 5 Underrated And Unmissable Horror Movies

I Saw The Devil TikTok recommendations

Scrolling through Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and countless other apps trying to find a horror movie to watch is a constant struggle. With way too many options for both streamers and movies, trying to pick the night’s watch can be overwhelming. Especially if you’re a horror fan that feels like they’ve seen all the bigger releases. So, TikTok user moviesandstuff14 put together a little list for us of some of the best underrated horror out there. And we have to say, it’s a solid list.

The Wailing

If you’re bored with Western religious horror centered around Catholicism and sad priests, then you need to check out Na Hong-jin‘s 2016 film The Wailing. Clocking in at two-and-a-half hours, the film is a police procedural, a possession story, a zombie movie, and much more. It’s a fascinating rollercoaster that follows a cop investigating a series of illnesses and violent murders in the small Korean village of Gokseong. The further he digs into the mystery, the more danger he puts himself and his family in. The exorcism scene alone makes this a must-watch.

The Innocents

Eskil Vogt’s kids-with-super-powers film from earlier this year is perhaps one of the most disturbing releases of 2022. Taking place at an apartment building during the sweltering days of summer, four kids realize they have powers and began experimenting with their limits. It’s a shocking examination of kids learning good versus evil and isn’t afraid of putting children in situations of extreme peril.

I Saw The Devil

Another Korean recommendation, and perhaps even more harrowing than The Wailing, from this TikTok is serial killer film I Saw The Devil. This twisted game of cat-and-mouse follows a Korean secret service agent hunting down the serial killer who murdered his fiance. But as the two become even more entangled, the violence only escalates. It’s a harrowing watch, to say the least, but will sate the appetite of any horror fan. Just have another feel-good watch on deck.

The Devil’s Candy

From the director of Australian gem The Loved Ones, Sean Byrne only directed one other film: the heavy metal horror The Devil’s Candy. Starring Ethan Embry as a heavy-metal-loving artist, the film follows him and his family as they move into their new home. But, shortly after they arrive, something strange begins to plague Embry. He has strange, disturbing visions of murder and his paintings take a violent turn. This film is downright chilling, and if you haven’t seen this or The Loved Ones, I implore you to check out more of Byrne’s work!

Tigers Are Not Afraid

Issa Lopez’s 2017 film isn’t just a horror film; it’s a cutting social commentary on violence and the treatment of children in Mexico, specifically due to the war on drugs. In Tigers Are Not Afraid, a young girl’s mother goes missing, so the girl finds a group of other abandoned children who are surviving on the streets. They take care of one another while dodging crimelords and drug dealers. But something else seems to be following them, too. Lopez’s film is part fairy tale, part coming-of-age story wrapped in a terrifying package that shows sometimes the scariest monsters are very real and live among us.
