The marketing materials for the film were sparse and left fans wondering what exactly they were getting themselves in for. It wasn’t long until early reviews for the gonzo spook house hit the Internet. In a cinema landscape saturated with reboots, prequels, remakes, and recognizable intellectual property, it was especially exciting to see a film like Barbarian reach the number one spot on the box office charts. Only a few weeks ago another original horror title managed to do the same, with The Invitation pushing out Bullet Train for the top spot. While these genre triumphs are likely indicative of a larger industrial issue at hand, it’s still exciting to see horror succeed and thrive no matter the state of Hollywood as we know it.
