Rob Zombie Almost Directed This Marvel Superhero Movie
Rob Zombie is known for his gnarly horror films that don’t skimp on gore and depravity. From his interpretation of the Halloween franchise to The Devil’s Rejects, Zombie has proved his talents in the world of horror. And now he’s showing a family-friendly side with his adaptation of The Munsters. But, he could have also added MCU director to his resume. As revealed by actor Thomas Jane, Zombie was almost at the helm of The Punisher 2.
Recently at Fanboy Expo Knoxville, Jane, who played the titular anti-hero in the 2004 film, revealed that Rob Zombie was in consideration for the film’s sequel.
According to MovieWeb, Jane said,
“There were a couple of iterations of Punisher 2. One of them was with Rob Zombie directing, which I thought would have been interesting. But that was one iteration. We were batting around script ideas and trying to find a new director. The Marvel folks wanted to go with a different director, and that was their choice, so it was like, ‘Who is that person going to be?’”
In The Punisher, character Frank Castle goes on a quest for revenge after the murders of his wife and children. The film takes a few artistic liberties compared to the original comic book. But they both boil down to a man turning to violence in the name of justice.
With gory and visceral films such as House of 1000 Corpses, Zombie was a great choice for the vigilante film. He could have imbued it with even more horror imagery. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. But who knows? With Sam Raimi taking to the MCU with Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, maybe there’s still hope for a Zombie superhero film.
