‘The Simpsons’ Will Spoof Stephen King’s ‘It’ With A Full Episode Dedicated to Pennywise

In an unprecedented move, this year we will be receiving not one but two Treehouse of Horror specials from The Simpsons. According to Variety, one episode will be a standard anthology of scares and the second will be fully dedicated to taking down all things Pennywise the Clown. For the first time in Simspons history, a full Halloween episode will be allotted to spoofing one topic: Stephen King’s It.

Revealed at Comic-Con, the 34th season of the long-running cartoon sitcom is prepared to scare with Pennywise and all things It. This is not fully surprising, since 2017’s It: Chapter One is officially the highest-grossing horror film ever made. The epic killer clown franchise is seemingly unbeatable, with the prequel series Welcome to Derry currently en route from HBO Max.

With Krusty the Clown as Pennywise becoming a popular tattoo over the years, The Simpsons executive producer Matt Selman speaks to Variety about the crossover.

“We’ve never done a single fantastical, bloody, scary, dark story, told over the scope of the 20 minutes and 40 seconds that is an episode. I think the fans are going to be really excited. Certainly, the tattoos already exist of Krusty as Pennywise. So we’re just writing about the tattoos now. You want as many tattoo-worthy moments in your episodes as you can.”

Stephen King’s It is a horror novel about a group of seven children who are terrorized by an evil being that exploits the fears and phobias of its victims. The novel was originally published in 1986 and was adapted for television and film in 1990, 2017, and 2019. The new season of The Simpsons airs on September 25th.
