The Top 10 Meanest Scenes In Horror, According to Reddit [Watch]
There’s nothing shocking about a little bloodshed in horror. In fact, some carnage is generally appreciated and celebrated, especially when done right. With that said, on occasion, some of our favorite genre titles can get a little bit too … well … mean-spirited. Violent irony, prolonged torture, and psychological warfare can occasionally elevate certain scenes into the realm of pure evil.
Recently Redditor Cmyers1980 asked the brave question: what are some of the most mean-spirited scenes in horror movie history? And of course, the front page of the Internet came through with some reliably brutal answers.
Here are the top ten mean-spirited sequences in horror movie history, according to Reddit:
Carrie
Maybe the meanest scene in cinema history, the brutal opening moments of Carrie will leave you heartbroken. Carrie White deserves so much better. While the terrifying scenes with her mother are also upsetting, the way her classmates taunt her in the shower is just a nightmare.
Hannibal
This scene from Hannibal showcases the character of Paul being hand-fed bits of his very own brain. It’s nasty and personal, and not something I’d care to revisit before a meal. We miss you, Ray Liotta.
The Devil’s Rejects
There are so many sequences of full-blown brutality to choose from within Rob Zombie’s iconic second feature The Devil’s Rejects. But I guess there’s just something especially mean-spirited about this one. ”I’m the devil, and I’m here to do to the devil’s work” is one iconic line for books.
Wolf Creek
This might be the nastiest selection on this entire list when it comes to violence and pure terror. It’s certainly one of the most painful and upsetting death sequences in all of Wolf Creek. The way in which Mick taunts his victim by saying “I’m going to do something now they used to do in Vietnam. It’s called making a head on a stick” is stomach-churning.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Farmer Gene and Pooh Bear meet the clowns. “I’ll tear this thing apart with my bare hands!” Gene deserved so much better. Damn those rude Klowns.
The House That Jack Built
Mega content warning for this one: children in peril. Not to mention an exceptionally believable performance by Sofie Gråbøl. Nightmare fuel.
American Psycho
The death of a man experiencing homelessness in American Psycho is without a doubt one of the rudest moments in the entire film, and that’s saying a whole lot. There’s no reason this man needed to go like this. What’s going to happen to his dog???
Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers
Now this one really hurts. After surviving Michael for two films, the sixth Halloween really does Jamie Lloyd dirty. I won’t stand for it, and pretend like it never happened. Justice for Jamie.
Drag Me To Hell
Christine may have made some grave errors along the way, but she did not deserve to actually get dragged to hell. This is one classic ending which really does earn its title. Sam Raimi, please return to horror proper and give us a follow-up to Drag Me To Hell.
A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
Nancy’s death in the third Nightmare chapter is gut-punch if there ever was one.
