10 Terrifying Satanic Cult Horror Films, According to Reddit

While the height of the satanic panic may have crested in the 1980s, there’s no reason we can’t still get spooked with some devilish cult cinema. Today we’re taking a look into ten bonkers, scary, and totally demonic cult-focused thrillers, and I’ve got some strong opinions. Thankfully Redditor Mairess99 is taking to the streets to uncover some of the wildest and most terrifying titles this sub-genre has to offer.

Coming in hot for the second spot on this list of satanically-tinged horror outings is an all-time personal favorite of mine: The House of the Devil. While this may not have been Ti West’s first feature film foray, it was certainly the one that made him a household horror name. This slow burn, perfectly accurate period piece tells the story of a young college girl who takes a mysterious babysitting gig. Of course, things do not go according to plan. The House of the Devil is careful, specific, and delivers on its on third act unlike almost any other title from around this time. While Ti West’s latest feature X also captures the gritty analog vibe of the 1970s, this one will never be outdone.

If you’re looking for something perhaps a little less literal on the satanic front, then first place contender The Void might be more up your alley. A Lovecraftian cornucopia for the books, The Void will gather your guts and refuse to give them back. An imperfect indie spectacle, this creeping little title is out-of-this-world when it comes to dreadful delights. Co-directed by the players behind Psycho Goreman, Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie, this Canadian production is likely unlike anything you’ve ever witnessed. Worth the price of the rental, to say the least.

Here are the top 10 terrifying satanic cult films, according to Reddit:

  1. The Void
  2. The House of the Devil
  3. The Invitation
  4. Kill List
  5. The Empty Man
  6. The Last Exorcism
  7. Eyes Wide Shut
  8. The Sacrament
  9. The Conspiracy
  10. The Serpent and the Rainbow

Another unmissable title from Reddit’s collection of scary cult recommendations is the recent release The Empty Man. Released in 2020 and helmed by David Prior, this existential elegy into the dark crevices of the soul was not well received upon release. However, over time The Empty Man has developed a cult following of its own, with horror fans finding hidden meanings in the text that may or may not have been intended. Say what you will about this film, it gets people talking.
