Fede Alvarez Reveals Alternate Ending To ‘Evil Dead’ (2013)

Evil Dead Rise final girls

Nine years ago yesterday, Fede Álvarez’s reimagining of Sam Raimi’s iconic film The Evil Dead hit theaters. His bloody take on the Book of the Dead is gnarly, mean, and absolutely drenched in crimson. Practical effects heighten the destruction of flesh and our final girl Mia (the incredible Jane Levy) kicks major ass.

The original ending of Evil Dead (2013), despite the rest of the film, is relatively hopeful as Mia survives the final battle and conquers the demon meant to bring about the end of the world. But, in honor of the film’s anniversary, Álvarez shared his alternate ending to the film. Check out the first draft ending below:

As much as I love Mia surviving the ordeal, having her burst apart in a shower of blood and viscera is inspired. It also fits the overall nihilistic tone of the film. Despite her own fight against the demonic, she’s ultimately unsuccessful. I’m also a sucker for a deeply upsetting ending.

Evil Dead (2013) follows Mia, a recovering drug addict, who goes to a family cabin in the woods with her brother and close friends to try and detox. But they quickly discover something very bad happened in the basement. And of course they open the Book of the Dead, which is wrapped in a trashbag and barbed wire. What ensues is the death and destruction of each member of the group.
