Stephen King’s The Boogeyman is now getting the cinematic treatment from Host and Dashcam director Rob Savage.

The young filmmaker is turning the brief story into a two-hour adaptation, Deadline reports. The shocker will be a Hulu production; the streamer will also distribute next year’s highly anticipated Hellraiser film.

The script for The Boogeyman is currently being penned by Black Swan writer Mark Heyman. Scott Beck & Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place) and Akela Cooper (Malignant) have also handed in drafts for the forthcoming adaptation.

“The Boogeyman” was first published in Stephen King’s 1978 horror anthology The Night Shift, and is considered one of Stephen King’s scariest short stories. “The Boogeyman” may have ruined countless childhoods, but until now it has never seen a proper film adaptation.

Published the same year as The Shining, The Night Shift houses countless classic King stories including Maximum Overdrive, Children of the Corn, and The Mangler.

This particularly terrifying tale simply revolves around a man who is in the middle of a conversation with his psychiatrist. It’s silly, maniacal, mean-spirited, and panic-inducing. Savage’s adaptation expands the world of the story a little bit further.

The film will now feature two young leading characters. Reeling from the tragic death of their mother, a teenage girl and her little brother find themselves plagued by a sadistic presence in their house and struggle to get their grieving father to pay attention before it’s too late.

Rob Savage’s most recent credit, Blumhouse’s Dashcam, saw its North American premiere this year at the Toronto International Film Festival. (Check out Dread Central‘s review here.)

The Boogeyman will be produced by 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Dan Levine & Dan Cohen.
