Arrow Video FrightFest held its closing night awards ceremony at the Cineworld, Leicester Square in London on Monday. One of its breakout honorees: Prano Bailey-Bond, who received the 2021 Screen Genre Rising Star Award for her outstanding directorial debut, Censor.

British film magazine Screen International presented the award. Bailey-Bond now joins the company of previous winners that include Prevenge director Alice Lowe, Double Date writer/actor Danny Morgan, Anna and the Apocalypse star Ella Hunt, and Tales From The Lodge writer-director Abigail Blackmore.

“With this year’s shortlist being as strong as ever, it takes a truly special talent to be crowned our Screen International/FrightFest Rising Star,” said Screen International editor Nikki Baughan. “With Censor, Prano Bailey-Bond has created a truly exceptional film that leaves an indelible mark on first watch and reveals ever more of itself on multiple viewings. [It’s] an impressive feat for any filmmaker, let alone one making her feature debut.”

The Genre Rising Star Award was created by Frightfest and Screen International in 2016 to recognize emerging genre talent out of the UK. This year, five filmmakers—on a shortlist of candidates that included three directors and two actors—were candidates for the prize.

The directors who joined Bailey-Bond on that list were Leroy Kincaide, who helmed The Last Rite, and Eric Steele, who wrote and directed Boy #5, a low-budget take on vampire mythology.

Actors on this year’s shortlist included April Pearson, who starred in Jamie Patterson’s psychological thriller The Kindred and Najarra Townsend, who portrayed a hair-dressing serial-killer in Jill Gevargizian’s The Stylist—a film on which she also served as producer.

Arrow Video FrightFest ran August 26-30, 2021. For more information, visit its website here. Censor is available on DVD and On Demand September 14, 2021, courtesy of Magnolia Pictures.
