New Trailer has Dropped for Shahad Ameen’s SCALES
I’m not familiar with Shahad Ameen. She’s apparently been tearing up the short film circuit while I was watching Bad Ben for the 200th time. It’s unfortunate that I’ve missed her work, because SCALES looks amazing. It will be opening in the U.S. in New York and LA on July 9th, with a wider release rolling out after that. Hopefully I’ll be able to see this in a theater because it looks so good.
Synopsis:
SCALES is a visually stunning feminist parable set in a dystopian landscape. It follows the story of a strong-willed young girl, Hayat (Basima Hajjar), whose poor fishing village is governed by a dark tradition: every family must give one daughter to the mermaid-like sea creatures who inhabit the waters, to ensure the village can continue their fishing expeditions. When Hayat’s father refuses, the girl becomes a pariah, considered a curse by the village and urged to sacrifice herself – but Hayat has her own plans for her destiny.

It sounds to be an awesome time. Anything water or fish-related when it comes to horror already has me hooked. Oh, I did a pun. Ouch. We have the trailer on offer for you below! SCALES has won pretty much won or been a selection at every prestigious film festival you could think of. It was also Saudi Arabia’s selection for best foreign language film at the 93rd Academy Awards.
Wow. It’s black and white and spooky. Mermaids are obviously involved. SCALES looks beautiful. Definitely something to pair up with The Lighthouse for a nautical horror double feature.
