HBO’s PARASITE Series Is A New Story Set in The Film’s “Universe”

Producer Adam McKay says HBO’s upcoming Parasite series is an original story set in the film’s “universe” and not a remake. Not exactly sure what he means by the film’s universe – which is ours. But I guess he means it takes place in America and the original film’s characters are still alive and well-ish in South Korea.

I guess we’ll find out one day.

This comes to us via McKay on the Happy Sad Confused podcast via Discussing Film.

Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite snagged Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Feature, and more at the Oscars. Kang-ho Song, Sun-kyun Lee, and Yeo-jeong Jo star.

Synopsis:
The Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist, to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide “indispensable” luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims’ newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks.

HB’s limited series wants Zodiac and Shutter Island star Mark Ruffalo to play one of the series’ leads. Ruffalo commented on the casting rumors, saying: “We’ve met, I love him [Bong Joon-ho], I love that movie. I might be playing the father in Parasite on a television show. Id love to do it. We’re sort of waiting on the script and all that, but yeah, that’s pretty much true and in the works.”

The film holds a killer 98% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: “An urgent, brilliantly layered look at timely social themes, Parasite finds writer-director Bong Joon Ho in near-total command of his craft.”
