For a while now there’s been talk of Steven Spielberg and Stephen King joining forces to develop a TV series based on King’s supernatural thriller Under the Dome for Showtime. However, the landscape has changed a bit.

Variety reports that CBS has given a straight-to-series 13-episode order to “Under the Dome,” a drama series from Amblin Television and CBS TV Studios based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name.

“Lost” alum Brian K. Vaughan has shepherded the TV adaptation of the series, which was initially developed by Steven Spielberg’s TV division at CBS’ sibling cabler, Showtime. CBS TV Studios-based hyphenate Neal Baer has been recruited to serve as showrunner and will exec produce with Vaughan, King, Amblin TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank and DreamWorks’ Stacey Snider.

Niels Arden Oplev, who helmed the original Swedish version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, will direct the first segment. The show will tell the story of small New England town that is suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. CBS intends to run the series next summer. And in an unusual step for them, the network plans to cut an SVOD deal that will make “Dome” episodes available for streaming shortly after the segments premiere on the network.

The SVOD component, coupled with what is expected to be robust international demand for the series, makes it affordable for CBS as summer programming as they’re said to be paying a slightly lower license fee than it would for a typical drama. More soon.

Book Synopsis:
Just down Route 119 in Chester’s Mill, Maine, all hell is about to break loose…

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day, a small town is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and rain down flaming wreckage. A gardener’s hand is severed as the dome descends. Cars explode on impact. Families are separated, and panic mounts. No one can fathom what the barrier is, where it came from, and when — or if — it will go away. Now a few intrepid citizens, led by an Iraq vet turned short-order cook, face down a ruthless politician dead set on seizing the reins of power under the dome. But their main adversary is the dome itself. Because time isn’t just running short. It’s running out.
