Horror History: Space Horror Epic JASON X Is Now 19 Years Old

On this day in horror history, director Jim Isaac’s tenth entry in the Friday the 13th franchise Jason X opened in theaters back in 2002. Lexa Doig starred along with Lisa Ryder, Chuck Campbell, and Kane Hodder as Jason Voorhees.

The film takes place in the year is 2455. The Place is Old Earth. Once the shimmering blue jewel of the galaxy, Old Earth is now a contaminated planet abandoned for centuries. Yet humans return to the deadly place they once fled. Not to live, but to research the ancient rusting artifacts of the bygone civilizations that caused this environmental disaster. And little does the most recent landing party of intrepid young explorers realize the fate that awaits them.

Jim Isaac directed from a screenplay by Todd Farmer (My Bloody Valentine 3D, Drive Angry, Trick). Noel Cunningham produced. Harry Manfredini composed the score.

Rated R for strong horror violence, language, and some sexuality, the film sports a 19% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus: Jason goes to the future, but the story is still stuck in the past.

The film made $13.1M in the U.S. and $3.8M internationally. That’s a worldwide gross of $16.9M. That makes it one of the lowest-grossing movies in the series. Jason Takes Manhattan made $14.3MM. Jason Goes to Hell made $15.9M.
