AMERICAN PSYCHO and SAW Are Now Being Considered for TV Adaptations

In an interview published today on Deadline, Lionsgate Television chairman Kevin Beggs revealed that both American Psycho and Saw may be getting TV adaptations. “American Psycho is in development,” Beggs told the industry trade. As for Saw: “We’re always exploring what we can do in television with something like the Saw franchise, so that’s a conversation.”

American Psycho, released in 1990, is directed by Mary Harron from her own screenplay, based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis; the film stars Christian Bale, Justin Theroux, and Josh Lucas. American Psycho inspired the sequel, American Psycho II: All American Girl, released in 2002; that film was directed by Morgan J. Freeman and stars Mila Kunis, William Shatner, and Geraint Wyn Davies.

James Wan and Leigh Whannell launched the Saw franchise in 2004 and the original film spawned nine sequels. The most recent installment, Spiral: From the Book of Saw is still slated for a May 14th release. You can check out the trailer and synopsis for that film below.

Synopsis:
A criminal mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in Spiral, the terrifying new chapter from the book of Saw. Working in the shadow of his father, an esteemed police veteran, brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks and his rookie partner take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past.  Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

Darren Lynn Bousman directs Spiral: From the Book of Saw from a screenplay written by Josh Stolberg and also Peter Goldfinger from a story by Chris Rock. Based on the original film by James Wan (The Conjuring) and Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man).

Chris Rock also stars along with Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson. The new film is once again produced by Oren Koules and Mark Burg. Charlie Clouser will also provide the score. Spiral: From the Book of Saw hits May 14, 2021.

“Beggs would not elaborate further,” says Deadline reporter Nellie Andreeva, “but I hear that Lionsgate TV is in early talks on a TV series adaptation of the book of Saw, from Mark Burg and Oren Koules’ Twisted Television. The Saw film franchise, one of the longest-running horror franchises in history and which has grossed over $1 billion at the box office, has long been rumored as ripe for a TV expansion.”
