Holy Sh*t, GODZILLA VS KONG Now at $20M After a Single Day in China!

Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong is off to a great start in China. The sequel had pulled in $18.2M, putting it on track to pass the $20M mark, according to THR.

Word of mouth for is strong for a Hollywood tentpole. It’s ahead of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which earned $20.9M on its first day, before finishing at $70.6M.

In addition to China, it opens in 38 other markets this week, including South Korea, Australia, Russia, Taiwan, and India, among others. It doesn’t hit in Japan until May.

But it’s already clear China alone will give Godzilla vs. Kong the biggest international theatrical debut of the pandemic era. Christopher Nolan’s Tenet previously had the biggest offshore start with $53M.

The official movie novelization hits on April 6th. The 352-page book is written by Greg Keyes (Godzilla: King of the Monsters novelization). Pre-order HERE.

Wingard directs Godzilla Vs Kong from a script by Eric Pearson and also Max Borenstein. Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and also Zach Shields penned the story based on Godzilla by Toho and Kong by Edgar Wallace & Merian C. Cooper.

Alexander Skarsgård stars with Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Eiza González, Jessica Henwick, Julian Dennison, Kyle Chandler, and also Demián Bichir. Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers produce.

The MPAA rated it PG-13 for “intense sequences of creature violence, destruction, and brief language”. It hits theaters and HBO Max on March 31.
