Horror History: EVIL DEAD II Was Released on This Day in 1987

The second installment in one of horror’s most storied franchises was released on this day in 1987. We’re talking about Evil Dead II, directed by Sam Raimi from a screenplay he co-wrote with Scott Spiegel, and starring Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, and Dan Hicks.

If it’s been a while, or if you’ve never seen Evil Dead II for yourself, check out the trailer and synopsis below.

Synopsis:
The second of three films in the Evil Dead series is part horror, part comedy, with Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) once again battling horrifying demons at a secluded cabin in the woods. After discovering an audiotape left by a college professor that contains voices reading from the Book of the Dead, Ash’s girlfriend Linda (Denise Bixler) becomes possessed by evil spirits that are awakened by the voices on the tape. Ash soon discovers there is no escaping the woods.

Trivia:
Stephen King was such a huge fan of The Evil Dead (1981) that he convinced producer Dino De Laurentiis over dinner (who was producing King’s Maximum Overdrive at the time) to have his production company DEG (De Laurentiis Entertainment Group) finance Evil Dead II. (Source)

The large demonic head Ash battles in the climax of the film, which the crew nicknamed the “rotten applehead”, was too large and cumbersome for the crew to carry back to California, so it was left in North Carolina and soon disappeared. Its whereabouts were unknown for a number of years until it was found in a Halloween haunted house attraction just outside the original shooting location of Wadesboro, North Carolina. (Source)
