Horror History: Happy Birthday, ORPHAN Star Isabelle Fuhrman!

On this day in horror history, Isabelle Fuhrman was born in Washington, D.C. in 1997. Most of the world knows her as Clove from The Hunger Games. But we’ll always think of her as Esther from Orphan.

Jaume Collet-Serra directed Orphan from a screenplay written by David Leslie Johnson from a story by Alex Mace. Vera Farmiga stars with Peter Sarsgaard, Fuhrman, C. C. H. Pounder, and Jimmy Bennett.

The film follows a couple Kate (Farmiga) and John (Sarsgaard) devastated by the loss of their unborn baby. They decide to adopt a child and at the orphanage, both feel drawn to a little girl (Fuhrman) named Esther. Soon the couple takes their new daughter home. But when a dangerous series of events unfolds, Kate begins to suspect that there is something evil lurking behind the child’s angelic exterior.

The film sports a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: While it has moments of dark humor and the requisite scares, Orphan fails to build on its interesting premise and degenerates into a formulaic, sleazy horror/thriller.

Fittingly, Fuhrman will next star in the prequel Orphan: First Kill. William Brent Bell directs the sequel from a screenplay written by David Coggeshall. Original writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick returns to serve as executive producer. Fuhrman reprises her role as Esther. Julia Stiles and Rossif Sutherland also star.

The sequel will find “Esther” escaping from an Estonian psychiatric facility. She then travels to the US by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family. There she comes into conflict with the family’s matriarch.

Fuhrman will portray Esther again through a combination of makeup and forced perspective shots. Two child actors also served as body doubles for Fuhrman. Principal photography began in November 2020 and wrapped in December.
