Sarah Michelle Gellar Jokingly Too “Tired and Cranky” for New BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Series

Well, I wasn’t expecting this. Sarah Michelle Gellar is too “tired and cranky” to return for Monica Owusu-Breen’s upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.

Mario Lopez had Sarah on to discuss her involvement in Feeding America something that dovetails nicely into her company FoodStirs a project she co-founded that creates healthy snack foods as well as her new role on the Netflix animated series MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE.

Gellar tells On With Mario Lopez: “[I’m a] wee bit, how do they say, long in the tooth for that? I do think that story lends itself, it’d be interesting to see how a chosen one would deal with that. I don’t think it’s me, I don’t think I should be the one doing it. [I’m] way too tired and cranky to put in that work again.”

Gellar also adds: “I love that the story holds up, and that people are calling for that.”

The last thing I remember hearing about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was that Whedon was developing the story with Monica Owusu-Breen (Alias, Lost, Fringe). Owusu-Breen will write, executive produce, and showrun. Whedon will executive produce alongside Gail Berman, Fran Kazui, Kaz Kazui, and Joe Earley.

Monica Owusu-Breen said back in 2018: “Before I became a writer, I was a fan. For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight, and struggle and slay. There is only one Buffy. One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel… They can’t be replaced. I wouldn’t try to. But here we are, 20 years later… and the world seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer… And that’s all I can say.”

The new version will be contemporary, building on the mythology of the original. Producers say: “Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today.”

Sources say, the new slayer to be African American. Stay tuned for more updates on the reboot as we hear them.
