Well now. Here’s a story we weren’t expecting to write. John Travolta starring in a Toxic Avenger remake? You know, this is just ludicrous enough to work on some strange planet and be true. Read on!
According to It’s On the Grid, Travolta is indeed attached to star in Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink’s remake of The Toxic Avenger, which he’ll write with Daniel C. Mitchell. No word yet if this is officially happening or not, or just whom Travolta would be playing, but one thing’s certain: It’s not gonna be Melvin the mop boy!
In the original the protagonist is a mop-wielding simpleton named Melvin, whose trusting ways made him easy prey for gym thugs who tossed him into a vat of toxic waste. The transformation into Toxie didn’t help his complexion but gave him rippling muscles to wreak havoc on New Jersey polluters. The byproduct was that, despite his misshapen appearance, the chicks finally dig Melvin after a lifetime of being ignored.
