Created by Tobin Wolf, the series followed the adventures of the titular team of heroes, cat-like humanoid aliens, who are forced to abandon their dying homeworld and crash land on a planet called Third Earth.

When the Thundercats awaken from their suspended animation, the group’s king and leader, Lion-O, discovers that his suspension capsule has slowed, rather than stopped, his aging, rendering him a child in the body of an adult. The Thundercats’ sudden arrival does not go unnoticed by the planet’s hostile inhabitants, putting them on a collision course with a demonic, mummified sorcerer known as Mumm-Ra.

The show was animated in Japan and being produced, written, and voiced in the US. It was originally distributed by Rankin-Bass Productions’ Telepictures Corporation, which would later merge with Lorimar Productions in 1986. In 1989, Lorimar-Telepictures was purchased by Warner Bros. who has owned the rights to the series from that point on.

A film adaptation was announced in 2007 veteran video game art director Jerry O’Flaherty set to direct. Based on a script written by Paul Sopocy, the CGI animated film was being produced by Spring Creek Productions and Aurelio Jaro. Originally set for release in the summer of 2010, the movie was never greenlit and has yet to be produced. That said, Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) expressed interest in playing Cheetara.
