On this day in horror history, RoboCop and Starship Troopers director Paul Verhoeven’s ultra-violent sci-fi action flick Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Ronny Cox, and Michael Ironside was unleashed in 1990.
Written by Ronald Shusett & Dan O’Bannon (Alien) along with Jon Povill and Gary Goldman, it was one of the most expensive films made at the time with a reported budget of $50–60 million. The film sports an original score composed by Jerry Goldsmith, and won a Special Achievement Academy Award for its visual effects.
Loosely based on the Philip K. Dick’s “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale”, the film tells the tale of Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a bored construction worker in the year 2084 who dreams of visiting the colonized Mars. He visits “Rekall,” a company that plants false memories into people’s brains, in order to experience the thrill of Mars without having to travel there. But something goes wrong during the procedure; Quaid discovers that his entire life is actually a false memory and that the people who implanted it in his head now want him dead.
The film sports an 82% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Under Paul Verhoeven’s frenetic direction, Total Recall is a fast-paced rush of violence, gore, and humor that never slacks.
