Killer-Car Cult Classic THE CAR Drives Onto Netflix Next Month
Director Elliot Silverstein’s killer car flick The Car with James Brolin (The Amityville Horror) and Ronny Cox (Robocop) will be driving onto Netflix next month.
The Car itself is a 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III black coupe that costs $84,000 to build. It was specially built by renowned designer George Barris who had built the Batmobile for Batman (1966). Twelve men worked on building four versions of “the car” for the movie for ten months. Construction took eight weeks.

Four were built for the movie – one for close-ups and three for stunt work. Two were destroyed making the movie and one is kept in a private collection.
It’s said that Barris had built cars for such celebrities as Cher, Sonny Bono, Liberace, Clark Gable, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and Evel Knievel.

Written by Michael Butler, Dennis Shryack, and Lane Slate, it begins when two bicyclists are run down by a strange black car in the desert near a small town. But this is just the first in a series of hit-and-runs. Sheriff Wade Parents is called in to investigate, and his deputy, is killed by the black sedan, which, some witnesses say, has no one behind its wheel. When the car threatens a local parade, the lives of the town’s children and Wade’s teacher girlfriend, Lauren, are endangered.
