Quentin Tarantino Interviewed Joe Dante On the Set of GREMLINS Back in ’84

The Howling and Piranha director Joe Dante’s Christmas creature feature Gremlins starring Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates is one of my favorite movies from childhood.

And today we learned that Quentin Tarantino interviewed Dante on the set.

He tells Pure Cinema Podcast: “I interviewed him on the set of Gremlins. They had me behind a partition because I wasn’t supposed to see what a gremlin looked like. I had all this access to him because a gremlin’s head fell off and it took them a while to fix the gremlin head. And so I’m sitting there talking to him, and then they fixed it, but they see I’m talking so they just let us talk for a while. I’m literally just this guy visiting the set, and they could have been shooting at least 20 minutes earlier, but they’re just letting him talk. At some point he goes, ‘Alright, you know what? I’m going to wrap this up. I kind of see that they’re done, they’re kind of waiting for me to come, but they don’t want to say anything.'”

The film begins when a gadget salesman looking for a special gift for his son, finds one at a store in Chinatown. The shopkeeper is reluctant to sell him the mogwai but sells it to him with the warning to never expose him to bright light, water, or to feed him after midnight. All of this happens and the result is a gang of gremlins that decide to tear up the town on Christmas Eve.

Gremlins was directed by Joe Dante (The Howling) from a screenplay by Chris Columbus (The Goonies). Michael Finnell produced and the film starred Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday, and Frances Lee McCain. Warner Bros. released the Christmas creature classic into theaters back on the same day as the original Ghostbusters, June 8, 1984.
