Birth.Movies.Death reveals this new version of Castle Freak centers on Rebecca who inherits a castle in Albania from her long lost mother shortly after going blind. Rebecca recruits her boyfriend John and their friends for a journey abroad to handle this unexpected inheritance, but upon their arrival, Rebecca discovers even more family secrets lurking in the shadows – some of which have startling and potentially cosmic implications. Confronted by disturbing occurrences within the castle and with her friends’ lives in imminent peril, Rebecca is forced to reckon with her family’s past to save herself from the eponymous Castle Freak.
Barbara Crampton produces this remake which stars Clair Catherine, Jake Horowitz, Chris Galust, Kika Magalhaes, Emily Sweet, Elisha Pratt, and Omar Brunson. It is directed by award-winning SFX makeup artist Tate Steinsiek from a screenplay written by Kathy Charles (10-31).
For the record, the original film told the tale of an American family who discovers the horrific mystery that lies within a spooky Italian castle. Jeffrey Combs plays John Reilly, an American who inherits an Italian castle when a distant relative passes away. A recovering alcoholic, John travels to Italy with his estranged wife Susan and blind daughter Rebecca. On the advice of the estate’s executor, the three plan to stay at the castle until they can liquidate the estate. Little do they know, however, that a horrible, freakish monster has been kept locked away in the basement. Soon, the beast has escaped and emerges hungry for blood, leading to a series of unexplained deaths and disappearances. When the police name John their prime suspect, he must find the true murderer before he or his family becomes the next victim. Along the way, he must not only battle the creature itself but overcome demons from his own guilty past.
