This Day in Horror: CASTLE FREAK Premiered

On this day in 1995: Castle Freak premiered.

I remember coming across this film at fifteen years old, on cable, and was instantly obsessed. I loved the… well, the freakof it all. Directed by Stuart Gordon and starring Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton, the film is loosely based on the short story “The Outsider” by H.P. Lovecraft.

The story involves an American couple inheriting an Italian castle. Unbeknownst to the new owners, the abused and hideously disfigured son of the former owner is still locked up in the depths of the castle. He is a monster because he has been treated as a monster.

Producer Charles Band had a poster mocked up for the film, but nothing else. When Stuart Gordon happened to see the poster, Band told him he could make the film, and do whatever he wanted, as long as there was a castle and a freak.
