Blumhouse’s horror-twist on Fantasy Island hit theaters this past weekend. And today we noticed that the film sports a horrific 9% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Fantasy Island tries to show audiences the dark side of wish fulfillment, but mainly serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of exhuming long-dead franchises.
Rated PG-13 for “violence, terror, drug content, suggestive material, and brief strong language” it centers on the enigmatic Mr. Roarke (Peña) who makes the secret dreams of his lucky guests come true at a luxurious but remote tropical resort. But when the fantasies turn into nightmares, the guests have to solve the island’s mystery in order to escape with their lives.
Fantasy Island is directed by Jeff Wadlow from a screenplay he wrote along with Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach based on the show created by Gene Levitt. Jason Blum produces. It stars Lucy Hale Maggie Q, Portia Doubleday, Jimmy O. Yang, Ryan Hansen, Charlotte McKinney, Parisa Fitz-Henley, Austin Stowell, Michael Rooker, and Michael Peña as Mr. Roarke.
