MY BEST FRIEND’S EXORCISM Snags Director

Back in late 2018, we passed along word that Happy Death Day writer-director Christopher Landon would be helming an adaptation of Grady Hendrix’s novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism.

And today we’ve learned via Deadline that Landon will only be producing the film with Penny Dreadful and Nightflyers director Damon Thomas set to take the helm.

On top of the above-mentioned shows Penny Dreadful and Nightflyers, Thomas is also known for helming episodes of Killing Eve, Dirk Gently, and Crooked House. He most recently helmed an episode of Netflix and BBC’s three-part adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

As mentioned above, Landon is producing the film from a screenplay written by Jenna Lamia, who is best known for her work on shows such as Good Girls, Awkward, and 90210.

Now while it may sound a little bit weird to hire a writer such as Lamia for this fright flick, as someone who loves the book, and has read it multiple times, trust me, she’s a fantastic fit.

The book is fittingly described as an unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist that blends teen angst, adolescent drama, unspeakable horrors, and a mix of ’80s pop songs into a pulse-pounding supernatural thriller. More specifically, it takes place in 1988 and follows high school sophomores Abby and Gretchen who have been best friends since fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act…different. She’s moody. She’s irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she’s nearby. Abby’s investigation leads her to some startling discoveries—and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?
