Netflix’s REBECCA Remake Gave Star Lily James Panic Attacks

Kill List and Free Fire director Ben Wheatley has teamed with Netflix for an upcoming adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s classic novel Rebecca. And today we have word from star Lily James that her role as Mrs. de Winter in the remake left her with panic attacks.

Specifically, she tells Deadline:

I found it really hard to let go of the character [de Winter]. She’s really bullied and gaslighted, she lives in a difficult headspace. I kept having panic attacks after it finished, I couldn’t shake it off.”

She adds that – even though she hasn’t seen a cut yet – she expects Wheatley’s film to be “very different” from Alfred Hitchcock’s Oscar-winning 1940 adaptation.

The film tells the story of a young woman who marries a fascinating widower only to find out that she must live in the shadow of his former wife, Rebecca, who died mysteriously several years earlier. The young wife must come to grips with the terrible secret of her handsome, cold husband, Max De Winter. She must also deal with the jealous, obsessed Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper, who will not accept her as the mistress of the house.

Along with James Mrs. de Winter, the remake stars Armie Hammer as Maxim de Winter, Kristin Scott Thomas as Mrs. Danvers, Tom Goodman-Hill as Frank Crawley, Keeley Hawes as Beatrice Lacy, Ann Dowd as Mrs. Van Hopper, Sam Riley as Jack Favell, Mark Lewis Jones as Inspector Welch, Jane Lapotaire as The Grandmother, and Ashleigh Reynolds as Robert.

This new version is directed by Ben Wheatley from a screenplay written by Jane Goldman based on Maurier’s novel. Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Nira Park produce.
