JOKER Becomes First R-Rated Movie to Make $1 Billion

As if you didn’t know, The Hangover and Old School director Todd Phillips’ Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix has gathered up its fair share of praise since it was released last month.

And today we’re hearing from THR that the film has officially become the first R-rated movie to snag over $1 billion at the box-office worldwide.

It beats out Matrix Reloaded with $828.7M, Deadpool 2 at $785M, Deadpool at $782.6M, and It at $700.4M.

Congrats, Joker!

Joker centers on a failed comedian who – forever alone in a crowd – seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks – the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he’s part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as The Joker.

Todd Phillips (The Hangover) directed Joker from a screenplay he co-wrote along with Scott Silver based on DC Comics characters. Phillips also produced the film along with Bradley Cooper and Emma Tillinger Koskoff. It stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Frances Conroy.

Joker is now playing at a theater near you.
