Anne Rice's Lestat Returning to the Big Screen in The Tale of the Body ThiefIt must be a wonderful time to be Anne Rice. Not only is her return to supernatural fiction, The Wolf Gift, just a few days away from publication (look for it 2/14/12), but today comes news that The Tale of the Body Thief, Book IV of The Vampire Chronicles, is heading to the big screen!

According to THR, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment has optioned the rights to Rice’s The Tale of the Body Thief. Imagine used its partnership with India’s Reliance Big Entertainment to fund the acquisition, and it is using the Imagine Reliance Writers Lab to work on the script. Lee Patterson, who wrote a well-regarded screenplay titled Snatched, is working on Body Thief.

Producing with Imagine are Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and Karen Kehala-Sherwood, the Imagine exec who oversees the Lab, and the company’s Erica Huggins are exec producing.

Book Synopsis:
Vampire-hero, rock star, and seducer of millions, Lestat is an immortal extraordinaire…

But Lestat yearns to be reborn a mortal. Tormented to the depths of his vampire soul, he wanders aimlessly across the globe from Amsterdam to the Amazon jungle until he meets the one being who can grant him his wish. He is the Body Thief, more sinister and evil than any daemon. But when Lestat surrenders his vampire body, he discovers what he’d so long ago forgotten: the awkwardness and anguish of being human…

With the project still in development and not yet set up at a studio, of course fans are clamoring to Anne Rice’s Facebook page to get more details from the lady herself, especially how involved she’ll be in the production. Sadly, not so much:

With regard to her writing the screenplay, she stated, “I was not asked, nor did I apply. I want to spend this time writing new books. I think the property is in good hands right now… I’m not involved. I’m working on my next book and will be touring for the Wolf Gift.

Will she have any input on the casting? “Not officially. I think the people involved in this production are all good people… It’s out of my hands now.

We’ll be keeping close tabs on this one so look for lots more soon!
