Haunting Video Shows A Giant Squid In US Waters For The First Time

We have seen plenty of movies about sea monsters, but some of the real creatures dwelling within our oceans are far more exotic and otherworldly than anything a fiction writer could dream up. We say this because a giant squid was filmed in US waters for the first time in history, and you can watch the eerie and enchanting video below.

This haunting footage was captured by an expedition called Journey into Midnight, which was funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Filmed around 100 miles southeast of New Orleans, and at a depth of 759 meters, it shows a three-meter squid as it investigates the Medusa, the team’s underwater camera system. As you can see, the creature is clearly intrigued by the contraption and even prods it with its tentacles, before it grows bored and swims away.

Because they are so rarely encountered by humans, little is currently known about the giant squid, but we do know that they live in the ocean depths and that they feed mainly on fish and smaller species of squid. Although they are rarely seen, scientists have estimated there to be around 4.3 million giant squids in existence, with some estimates being much higher, so they are hardly an endangered species. And given the fascination humans have with exploring the unknown, we expect there will be many more attempts to capture these elusive animals on camera.
