SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY Remake in the Works at Fox Searchlight
When the sleeper thriller Sleeping with the Enemy (based on the novel of the same name) hit theaters in 1991, domestic abuse wasn’t something that was as widely acknowledged. Over 25-years later, the conversation may have gotten loud and clear, but our society still has a way to go if we’re committed to true equality. Domestic abuse is still an issue worth shining lights on, so a reboot of Sleeping with the Enemy seems timely.
And that’s what the folks at Fox Searchlight must have thought as well. Deadline just announced that Little Woods director Nia DaCosta will be helming the project.
Based on Nancy Price’s 1987 novel of the same name, thriller Sleeping with The Enemy saw Roberts – then at the height of fame just after Pretty Woman – play a woman trying to escape her abusive husband. The film was a box office hit for Fox taking $175M off a $20M budget. No other details have been released about the reboot at this stage.

Synopsis:
After faking her death in order to flee
from her violent husband, Martin (Patrick Bergin), Laura Burney (Julia Roberts)
leaves Cape Cod and moves to Iowa, where she adopts a new identity and starts
dating a local teacher, Ben Woodward (Kevin Anderson). Martin, meanwhile,
unearths evidence suggesting that she isn’t dead, and when her mother confirms
this, he tracks her to Iowa. He finds Laura and Ben and confronts them, forcing
her to fight for her life once again.
The original Sleeping with the Enemy was directed by Joseph Ruben.
