Here’s Your First Look at Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker

This probably won’t be the kind of reveal you were expecting!

We were excited and intrigued when we first heard of Francis Ford Coppola’s plans to produce an origin story for Batman’s archnemesis The Joker; we were further drawn in by reports it would be a gritty, hard-boiled affair; something akin to a character study. We definitely paid attention when we heard that Joaquin Phoenix had been cast as Gotham’s “Crown Prince of Crime”.

This weekend, we got our first look at Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker (or, more specifically, Arthur Fleck). The reveal came courtesy of Joker director Todd Phillips. It quickly becomes apparent this is Joker’s pre-transformation manifestation, shocking mostly because we’re not used to seeing the character without greasepaint.

Also, he looks too unassuming to become The Joker—but perhaps that’s the beauty of it. It’s almost impossible to imagine this guy rising to the level of Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, or even Jared Leto—but Phoenix definitely has the chops. We’re still incredibly interested to see how this one turns out.

Joker is targeting an October 2019 release.
