Oscilloscope Brings a Taste of November to February

The worlds of fantasy and horror have long been intertwined. We’ve seen it with Tim Curry’s Darkness, the villain in Ridley Scott’s Legend. It was present in Conan the Barbarian, when Conan fought against a giant snake. Even Desmond Davis’ Clash of the Titans mixed a world of Greek mythology with some rather horror-based visuals, such as the Kraken, Medusa, and the giant scorpions.

Hitting New York theaters on February 23 (Los Angeles on March 2), Oscilloscope will be releasing Estonia’s November, a fascinating addition to the world of fantasy horror. Based on Andrus Kivirähk’s novel Rehepapp, the film follows a young village girl who will do anything to make her affections for a local boy known, even though he has his eyes set on someone else. Things quickly become dark in this black-and-white feature that won Best Cinemtography at 2017’s Tribeca.

Synopsis:
In this tale of love and survival in 19th century Estonia, peasant girl Liina longs for village boy Hans, but Hans is inexplicably infatuated by the visiting German baroness that possesses all that he longs for. For Liina, winning Hans’ requited love proves incredibly complicated in this dark, harsh landscape where spirits, werewolves, plagues, and the devil himself converge, where thievery is rampant, and where souls are highly regarded, but come quite cheap.

November was directed by Rainer Sarnet and stars Rea Lest, Jörgen Liik, and Arvo Kukumägi.
