Our recent article about “the male body in possession horror” (read it here in case you missed it) generated quite a bit of discussion relating to gender roles in films and TV series like “The Exorcist”; and a new project heading our way next month goes a long way toward “bashing” stereotypes as well.

What we have for you today is info on Sister of Darkness: The Chronicles of a Modern Exorcist by R.H. Stavis (pictured right) with Sarah Durand, which HarperCollins/Dey Street Books is releasing on February 6, 2018. You can get pre-ordering info here.

What makes it so intriguing? It’s the debut memoir from the world’s only nondenominational exorcist, who also happens to be female. Now, for the first time, readers can witness Stavis at work as she wrests destructive entities from innocent victims and explains the extent to which our world is populated by energy-sucking demons of all kinds and levels of power.

A screenwriter for film, television, and video games, Stavis created the backstory for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and has published four horror novels.

If you happen to live in or near Los Angeles, you can attend a book signing for Sister of Darkness on February 10th at 5PM PT at the Barnes & Noble @ The Grove, 189 The Grove Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90036; 323-525-0366.

Synopsis:
As a secular exorcist based in Los Angeles, working under the radar and never advertising her services, Rachel Stavis has been sought out by thousands, from Hollywood moguls and rock icons to stay-at-home moms. Never charging for her services, Rachel does her work because she feels called to it as her duty, to use her gift for good. But for many years, the horror screenwriter and novelist by day denied that gift… or tried to. As a little girl, she could see “monsters” floating around her bedroom or attached to other children. Told by her abusive mother that the monsters weren’t real and to stop lying, Rachel learned to stay silent.

But a series of traumatic events in her adulthood opened the floodgates to the spirit world for Rachel, forcing her to acknowledge her unique ability and embrace her power to heal. Since then, Rachel has become “Buffy 24/7” as she puts it, dedicating her life to helping others dispel the forces that feed off our energy, sucking us dry and wrecking our lives. She bravely ventures into places where unspeakable acts have occurred, casting out the entities that lay within, including the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. For years, Rachel worked quietly in the shadows, but she is now ready to share her stories – and the spirit realm she battles – with the world.

A unique look at demonology free of the religious dogma that usually accompanies it, SISTER OF DARKNESS is a story of an exorcist’s training, some of Rachel’s most extreme cleansings cases, and what is required of her to complete an exorcism. Rachel also provides a taxonomy of entities as well as the spirit guides upon which she relies. Most importantly, she helps us understand the hurt and pain that can open every one of us up to possession, how to know if we are carrying an entity around ourselves, and what we can do about it if we are.

Frightening, eye-opening, and utterly enthralling, SISTER OF DARKNESS brings to light a world ruled by destruction, chaos, and fear and the story of the one woman who bravely fights to protect those who seek her out.
