The 49th New York Film Festival will take place September 30 to October 16, and while just a few of the films screening during the fest have been announced so far (the rest are coming soon), we do know Pedro Almodovar will be making his ninth NYFF appearance on October 12th with The Skin I Live In.
Almodovar’s dramatic thriller, which is part of the fest’s “Gala Screenings” along with David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method, reunites him with Antonio Banderas, who starred in several of the director’s earlier films. Elena Anaya and Marisa Paredes co-star.
Synopsis
Ever since his wife was burned in a car crash, Dr. Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon, has been interested in creating a new skin with which he could have saved her. After twelve years, he manages to cultivate a skin that is a real shield against every assault. In addition to years of study and experimentation, Robert needed a further three things: no scruples, an accomplice and a human guinea pig. Scruples were never a problem. Marilia, the woman who looked after him from the day he was born, is his most faithful accomplice. And as for the human guinea pig…
This year’s opening film is Roman Polanski’s Carnage. In addition, the festival will honor the 100th anniversary of the Nikkatsu Corporation with a 37-film salute to the legendary Japanese film studio, which includes works ranging from the 1920’s all the way up to the current day’s Cold Fish, directed by Sion Sono.
